Outstanding programs abound for students who wish to teach in elementary, middle, or secondary school music programs.
Students pursuing a B.M.Ed. follow a curriculum designed to meet and exceed certification requirements in choral or instrumental music in Missouri's K-12 public and private schools.
The program combines music courses -- academics, applied music, ensembles and methodology -- teacher education and the liberal arts. Webster students have many opportunities for field experiences in several St. Louis area school systems, working directly with outstanding educational specialists.
Senior-year student teaching may be taken through Webster's campus in Vienna, Austria, providing a unique international experience. Graduate students may elect to an emphasis in Orff or Kodaly Studies as part of their program.
Dr. Kathryn Smith Bowers, director of music education, is a recognized authority in teaching choral conducting and rhythmic movement. Webster sponsors music education workshops each summer, including a nationally recognized Orff-Schulwerk and Kodaly certification course.
The Piano Proficiency Examination is a practical examination to measure whether students have mastered skills necessary for successful music teaching. Piano proficiency must be completed before beginning apprentice teaching. Music education majors must be able to play accompaniments to instrumental and choral music from collections of intermediate difficulty used in public schools.
If you plan on majoring in art, dance, music, or theatre, you must complete a portfolio review or audition as part of your application to Webster.

Webster University's Leigh Gerdine College of Fine Arts enables students to become confident, intellectually prepared artists and performers in a global environment. Our art, music, theatre and dance majors combine significant studio experiences with an excellent faculty-driven liberal arts education. Many alumni have been nominated for and won Tony, Emmy, and Academy Awards. Theatre graduates are currently with national touring companies of Peter Pan, Chicago, Cabaret, and Sunset Boulevard.

Special Study Opportunities
Student musicians get to hone their skills in Vienna, home to legendary composers Beethoven, Mozart and Strauss where Webster has had a campus since 1981. Students may take instruction on their major instrument (voice, keyboard, trumpet, flute, etc - jazz or classical), take courses in music history - especially relating to Vienna's traditions, study composition, do special projects on opera, and participate in ensembles and recitals.
