The primary focus of the Composition program is contemporary concert music, although students are encouraged to explore many other styles and technologies like jazz, electronic, computer and MIDI applications.
Faculty composers work directly with composition majors and opportunities for the performance of students' work are abundant. The Webster New Music Ensemble, Wind Ensemble, Chorale, Jazz Combos, Jazz Singers and Big Band all perform on campus.
Major composition projects and public performances are required of all composition students.
In partnership with the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra, Webster has sponsored lectures by composers such as Claude Baker, John Corigliano, Donald Erb, Karel Husa, Barbara Kolb and Joan Tower.
Applicants to the undergraduate music program must complete an in-person audition or interview with the music faculty and complete a music theory diagnostic examination. The examination is used to assist faculty in placing students in the proper classes.
