Webster's International Human Rights program seeks to encourage greater understanding of international human rights standards, problems, and solutions.
Offered through the University's Center for Interdisciplinary Studies, the program draws from courses in history, politics, international relations, philosophy, English, behavioral and social sciences, religious studies, and communications.
Students interested in the study of human rights and/or careers in human rights and humanitarian support, study, advocacy, and protection, have four program options:
Major in International Human Rights
The major in International Human Rights is the most comprehensive and focused option for a student with a keen interest in human rights.
It is especially appropriate for students who are strongly considering careers with human rights and human rights-related agencies, and/or graduate or professional school programs with a strong human rights components. In addition to human rights curriculum, students must acquire intermediate competence in a foreign language.
Minor in International Human Rights
A minor in International Human Rights entails an organized introduction to human rights as a field of interest or study.
Certificate in International Human Rights
More demanding than the international human rights minor but less demanding than the international human rights major, the certificate is well suited to students with a strong interest in human rights but who are majoring in another subject.
As a "standalone" certificate, it is also appropriate for those students with a strong interest in human rights who have completed a bachelor's degree at another institution but who are not currently considering graduate or professional school.
As an Area of Emphasis
International Human Rights is also offered as an area of emphasis within the International Studies major.
