The power of the written word drives Journalism majors at Webster University. These students prepare for jobs at newspapers and magazines or to launch a freelance-writing career of their own.

They prepare by doing. Students are taught the reporting, writing and design skills and, during their time here, regularly write for a pair of award-winning publications: The Journal , the weekly campus newspaper, and/or The Ampersand , a biannual magazine/yearbook.

Journalism students are required to learn all genres of newspaper writing and receive a firm grounding in journalism history, media ethics and communications law.

Prior to graduation, most students write for monthly, weekly and daily publications during an internship. A recent list of opportunities includes: The Alton Telegraph , St. Louis Post-Dispatch , Times Newspapers Inc. and the West End Word.

School of Communications

Webster's School of Communications operates with one goal in mind - to educate and prepare its students to excel as skilled professionals in a global field of communications. To achieve this goal, the school takes a hands-on approach to learning. Students work with professional-grade media equipment as early as their freshman year.

The Ampersand, a biannual student magazine, was named one of the six best in the nation by the Columbia Scholastic Press Association.
