There is one person backstage during every production who followed every detail of the process from beginning to end -- the stage manager.
The Conservatory of Theatre Arts at Webster University has created a curriculum specifically for a person aspiring to this position. The program blends classroom experience with practical problems found in rehearsal and performance.
In the professional theatre, the stage manager does more than call cues. Duties include: notating stage movement and scene tempos; organizing a master schedule; providing daily communication between the director and designers; and ensuring each production area is running on schedule.
The Stage Management program is unique to the Conservatory and no more than five students are accepted into the first year. Upon graduation, 100 percent of the students are placed in jobs.
